Summary: There is a great deal of interest in affordable tools for testing. The range of test tools that have free or cheap alternatives span many categories including test management, test execution and test design. In this article, I want to focus on test execution tools and specifically, test automation tools.

One of the tremendous benefits of the Internet is the ability of people to collaborate on software development to create tools for specific purposes. Available tools include open source as well as lesser-expensive commercial tools that are marketed by smaller companies.

As a tester, I have always found it helpful to have my own toolkit that I understand and can take with me on projects. If my client has other tools, or does not want me use my own tools, that’s fine. I still like to be prepared with my own tools that I can use in a pinch if the opportunity arises.

The problem is that I don’t have the same deep pockets as some companies do. So, I look for affordable ways to get the job done. Sometimes my clients don’t have the budgets for major commercial test tools, either. In that case, I can offer other alternatives that add to my value as a consultant. Click to read the rest
